As we’ve been preparing our new programs to promote your hope, healing and health, we’ve been thinking a lot about the whole you. Your mind. Your body. Your spirit. And, what can we offer that really makes a difference in helping you experience emotional wellness?
Our new class, “B.R.E.A.T.H.E. for your H3” focuses on one of the simplest but most powerful actions you can take to feel good: Breathe. Not shallow breaths; we all tend to hold our breath when we are under stress – but breathe deeply.
Here’s 3 really good reasons why:
1. Our brains want it. Breathing deeply helps us think through tough situations and physically oxygenates our blood which causes our brain to release endorphins. Endorphins decrease pain and reduce stress leading to good feeling emotions.
2. Our hearts love it. When we fill up our lungs, our hearts receive more oxygen and this increases our cardiovascular capacity. Similar to aerobic exercise, breathing deeply keeps our cells more active and more likely to burn fat rather than tapping into other stored energy sources.
3. Our nervous system needs it. Taking time to relax and breathe deeply and completely, triggers a calming of our nervous system and gives our parasympathetic nervous system (which controls our fight/flight/freeze system) a much-needed break.
