Loss of all types (death of a loved one, a pet, a job, a home, etc.) can be a traumatic. Grief is a natural and important response to loss. How we process the whirlwind of emotions connected to our grief, however, is journey that warrants great compassion and understanding; especially, given the fact that life doesn’t stop when we’re grieving. Life marches on, whether we want it to or not.
Committed to providing help to individuals on this healing journey, several years ago we discovered and became Certified in the Grief Recovery Method, a program that is designed to help our patient’s experience hope, healing and health even in the midst of loss. And, today, we wanted to take a few minutes to give you some insight and history on the Grief Recovery Method – how it came about and how it is designed to help a grieving heart.
Over 30 years ago, John W. James, (Founder of The Grief Recovery Method) lost his newborn son. After this traumatic experience, he found himself on a journey to find ways to deal with the pain he and his wife were experiencing. Everything he found, however, was focused on dealing with grief from an intellectual perspective, which he knew had nothing to do with how his heart felt. His head wasn’t “broken”, his heart was. James knew that a method that addressed the pain in his heart with the journey to recovery needed to be created. He decided to focus his attention on creating the Grief Recovery Method to provide support to the mind and the heart, giving those coping with grief, a way to move forward and find a way to live a fulfilled life.
The Grief Recovery Method, James created, is designed around the belief that nothing is wrong with you when your heart is broken and needs mending. It is okay to feel the way you are feeling. It is possible to learn to live again. The Method provides a step-by-step way to take action and move actively into recovery versus being inactive waiting for your feelings to change. It also explores the myths of grief and provides valuable tools to help promote movement.
At H3-Hope, Healing and Health – we sincerely believe there is a time for hope and we strive to create both a place for healing, and a way to health. Offering the Grief Recovery Method is a program we believe in because we know that life doesn’t stop when you are grieving… it marches on… and everyone deserves a path to recovery.
