Hope is defined as “A feeling of expectation; a desire for a certain thing to happen; a feeling of trust; a possibility.” There are times in everyone’s lives when what they need more than anything else is a sense of hope; the realization that they aren’t alone and that healing is possible.
RECOGNIZING THE SIGNS
Whether you personally are struggling or know another person facing a difficult time, the first step in the emotional wellness journey is realizing you are not alone, that that help is possible, and the time to reach out is now. Below is a list of statements that are commonly said or heard when it is time to reach out for help:
- I am so angry.
- I feel anxious all the time.
- I feel confused.
- I’m so embarrassed.
- I feel ashamed.
- I am terribly lonely.
- I wish I didn’t feel so jealous.
- I am really disappointed.
- I can’t stop thinking.
- I really need a sense of direction.
- I’m shocked by what has happened.
- I feel depressed.
- I feel hyper all the time.
- This addiction is ruining my life.
- I don’t know how to process this.
- I feel out of control.
- I feel overwhelmed.
- I just can’t go to sleep.
- I’m in pain all the time.
- I don’t have any energy.
- I worry all the time.
- I feel numb.
- I feel so much regret.
- I feel lost and alone.
Beyond the words that are expressed, behaviors also reveal the need for help. Here are examples of behaviors that you may experience in yourself, or in your family and friends, signaling the need for help.
- Not taking care of self
- Mood changes
- Missing work / appointments / school
- Difficulty concentrating
- Outbursts of anger and/or aggression
- Expressions of sadness
- Negative self-talk
- Sharing relationship conflicts
- An unwillingness to talk
- Drinking / using drugs frequently

GRIEF & LOSS: For individuals facing grief and loss of all types, H3 offers an open bereavement support group called the HEALING HEARTS CIRCLE at no cost on the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of each month at 6 p.m. This Circle is designed to give you or someone you care about the opportunity to connect, share and learn how we can help you find peace.
